Sharing ideas to help develop children’s skills through play.

Advent maths puzzles

As well as being fantastic for social skills, communication, sharing and turn-taking, games are a brilliant way to develop both understanding of mathematical concepts and the skills to solve problems. The key is to gradually get children to explain and analyse their own thinking by modelling this (so children get used to hearing an adult think aloud). Ask them what they are going to do, how and why they are going to do it, and talk about how the same strategy or technique might work for another game, a sport or an academic task. Of course, we wouldn’t do this EVERY time a game is played! (Read more about executive function development here) Maths related resources are here. Maths infographics are here. More ideas for supporting maths are here. Daily advent posts will be collated on this page. You can share this post using any of the buttons below.
